What “place” means “Place” = go to a specific spot (bed, mat, platform) and stay there until released. Pick one clear spot to start. A raised cot or mat works best because it’s obvious. What you need Clicker Small, high-value treats A “place” object (bed/mat) A release word (e.g., “free,” “okay,” “break”) Step 1: Load the clicker (if needed) If your dog is new to clickers: Click Treat Repeat ~10 times until the click makes their ears perk up. Step 2: Click curiosity Stand near the place object Any interaction with it → click + treat Look at it? Click. Step toward it? Click. Sniff it? Click. Don’t say “place” yet. Let them figure out the game. Step 3: Click the full behavior Once your dog is confidently moving toward it: One paw on → click Two paws → click All four paws → BIG click + jackpot treat 🎉 Now you’re getting somewhere. Step 4: Add the cue “Place” When they’re reliably hopping on: Say “Place” Pause half a second Dog goes to spot → click + treat Timing matters: cue before the action, not during. Step 5: Build duration Right now they’ll hop on and hop off. Totally normal. To build staying: Dog goes to place → click + treat Wait 1 second → click + treat Gradually increase time between clicks If they step off, no scolding—just reset and try again. Step 6: Add the release word This is huge and often skipped. Dog is on place Say “free!” Toss a treat away from the mat Now they learn: I don’t leave unless I’m released. Step 7: Add distance & distractions Slowly level it up: Take one step away Turn your back Sit down Walk around the room Click for success. If they fail, you went too fast—dial it back. Common mistakes to avoid 🚫 Repeating “place, place, place” 🚫 Luring forever with food 🚫 Making place a punishment 🚫 Asking for too much duration too soon Thank you so much for supporting my channel Business inquiry’s 💌 : Meranda@NightandDayK9training.com: Check out Our Website : https://www.nightanddayk9training.com
