For the 2009 F-150, Ford cribs liberally from its Super Duty brethren. The Super Duty, new the year before, proves popular, so Ford gives the F-150 a little familial resemblance to improve its showroom appeal. With a more prominent grille, aggressive headlights, and squared-off styling, the 12th-generation F-150 moves further afield from its rounded, aerodynamically styled predecessors. The truck also gets the benefit of a new, fully boxed frame for improved torsional rigidity. Engines are updated across the board. When this generation of of Ford's F-150 was introduced, it was impressive enough to win Motor Trend's Truck of the Year honors. That was despite its one big downside: an aging lineup of engines, all three of which were V8s. They included a two-valve, 248 horsepower, 294 lb-ft, 4.6-liter V8; another 4.6-liter V8 with three valves per cylinder that put out 292 horsepower and 320 lb-ft of torque; and a 5.4-liter V8 offering 310 horsepower and 365 lb-ft. Making things worse, the two-valve was backed by a four-speed automatic, and fuel economy wasn't good enough. For the 2011 model year, all-new engine lineups were offered. Two of the engines, the 3.7-liter V6 and 5.0-liter V8 both used in the contemporary Mustang. The 6.2-liter V8 used in the Super Duty was made available with the Platinum, Lariat, SVT Raptor, Harley Davidson, and Lariat Limited trims. Finally, the 3.5-liter direct-injected twin-turbo EcoBoost V6 was offered in the F-150 starting in early 2011. All engines were paired with a new six-speed automatic transmission. Electric power-assisted steering was made available on all engines except the 6.2-liter V8. The F-150 could be equipped for a maximum towing and hauling capacity of 11,300 lbs and 3,060 lbs, respectively.
