On the morning of May 8, the volcano on the island of Martinique suddenly unleashed a massive cloud of ash, steam, and superheated gases. This pyroclastic flow, traveling at over 100 mph (160 km/h), obliterated the city of Saint-Pierre in minutes. Over 30,000 people lost their lives, with only a few survivors. The tragedy was compounded by the authorities’ failure to evacuate the population, despite clear signs of volcanic activity weeks prior.
