The second instalment from my visit to North Wales comes, of course, from the other narrow gauge line into Porthmadog, the picturesque Welsh Highland Railway. The line of course being famous for the use of the NG16 Beyer Garratt locomotives of the South African Railways, which were brought in to aid with the lines reopening in stages during the late 1990's. The Garratts enormous size and strength (for a 2ft narrow gauge loco), combined with their manoeuvrability made them ideal for tackling the stiff climbs and sharp curves of the WHR. On this particular week, NG16's numbers 130 and 87 were in charge of the lines sparse but popular service. With the line being over 24 miles line and traversing the highlands of Snowdonia, this makes journey times rather large. However it favours the photographers, as many opportunities are presented to catch a single services train many times in spectacular scenery. 0:00 130 - Porthmadog Harbour 1:20 130 - Cambrian Crossover 2:00 130 - Aberglaslyn Pass 3:14 130 - Meillionen (Beddgelert Forest) 5:19 130 - Ffridd Uchaf 7:23 130 - Horse shoe Curve (Rhyd Ddu) 9:30 130 - Aberglaslyn Pass 10:21 87 - Porthmadog 12:18 87 - Pont Croesor 13:21 87 - Aberglaslyn Pass 15:41 87 - Horse shoe Curve 17:28 87 - The Summit 18:46 87 - Aberglaslyn Tunnels 19:50 87 - Prenteg 21:08 87 - Porthmadog Harbour With the weather not as favourable during the week as we'd hoped, it lead to the day spent chasing on WHR being rather gloomy, but spirits were high as this incredible line didn't fail to disappoint once again.
