Auxiliary engines for boats: are they really necessary? When to use them and how to keep them running efficiently In this video, we talk about auxiliary engines for sailing boats and motorboats, particularly for boats under 10 metres in length. Find out when it is really useful to have one on board, how to use it correctly and, above all, why maintenance is essential to avoid getting into trouble on the open sea. --- When are auxiliary engines used? *Auxiliary engines for boats* are mainly used when the **main engine is not working**. They are essential for providing alternative propulsion, for example to return to port safely. On boats under 10 metres, the auxiliary engine is almost always an **outboard**, often stowed in a locker and mounted when needed. How are they used? Operation is simple: take the outboard motor from its housing, install it outside, start it and use it to move the boat where necessary. However, it is important to note that **having one is not enough**: an auxiliary engine that has not been used for years is unlikely to start when you need it. Auxiliary engine yes or no? This raises an important question. If you own an **auxiliary engine**, you must keep it in perfect working order, **just like the main engine**. Many boat owners forget this: the engine remains locked in a locker for years, never being turned on. The result? **Damaged carburettors and injectors**, and an engine that is unusable when you need it most. Valid alternatives If you do not intend to take care of the maintenance of the auxiliary engine, it may be better to *avoid purchasing one**. Alternatively, take a **portable VHF radio* with you that is always in working order: in an emergency, you can contact the rescue services and, if necessary, have your boat towed. The cost of a tow can be less than that of an unused and poorly maintained auxiliary engine. But be careful... If you sail in *isolated areas* where rescue services are not immediately available, then *the auxiliary engine can make all the difference**. In this case, however, there are no excuses: **keep it in perfect working order* and test it regularly. --- 👉 *Find out all the details in our video!* Subscribe to the channel so you don't miss out on any useful content on sailing, safety at sea and boat maintenance. *Fair winds and keep an eye on the weather!* 📌 Meet me at the BARCHE BELLANDI shipyard in Via Vò s/n, 25015 Desenzano del Garda (BS). 🛥 Are you a fan of the marine world?
