Recorded at St Michael's, Ancoats, Manchester on 25th March 2016 Psappha Ensemble - Dov Goldberg - Clarinet Programme note: This piece takes as its point of departure the Loure from Bach’s E major partita for solo violin, particularly the movement's opening upward leap and downward descent. Throughout the piece the music moves higher and higher, and other ideas spin off from Bach’s material and gradually take on a life of their own. The clarinet frantically tries to keep the piece together, but is ultimately broken by the effort. Biography ABOUT THE COMPOSER: William Cole William Cole has written for ensembles including the Britten Sinfonia, Kokoro, Psappha and the Fournier Trio, and has written extensively for choirs including the BBC Singers, Blossom Street and the choir of Clare College, Cambridge. His music has been performed at the City of London and Three Choirs Festivals and broadcast on BBC Radio 3. He is also a conductor, pianist and singer, and leads composing workshops for the Worshipful Company of Musicians. www. williamcole.co.uk
