Antony presents of how to prepare for your conference presentation and highlights the best ways to fight stress. ---------TRANSCRIPT--------- For the best results we're going to start two days in advance and this is very important: have your presentation finished. No corrections. No edits. No adjustments. Finished. Two days at minimum before your conference presentation. Likewise have your notes printed or written and have your clothes cleaned and ironed. Being prepared at least two days in advance takes all of the pressure off of your shoulders of preparing the night before, but also you are confident that you know your information inside and out when you give your presentation. All right, another great thing to do is to talk to people talk to colleagues and supervisors days weeks and even months in advance about your presentation. Having these conversations can make you feel more comfortable in talking about your presentation you can also get good pointers and tips on your presentation. Focus on calming activities such as reading. You could also do something like take a bath or do some light exercise to help calm you down. Think about what's worked in the past and plan it into your schedule. It's really important that you find your presentation location. You should learn how to get there, find the room, go into the room, and get a feel for the room. Look at the podium and become familiar with your surroundings and visualize yourself giving the presentation. Now it's the night before your presentation and you have a checklist of things that you need to do. Double and triple check all of your materials. Also, double check your clothes and shoes, pack your bag, make breakfast plans, and set two wake-up alarms. Now it's time to look at the bedtime checklist. Finish hours before you need to sleep. All of the things we've talked about before should be finished by 6 pm at the very latest! Plan to sleep at a normal time. It's also important that you do your best to be comfortable bring clothes that you know you're comfortable. Bring music that you know you love to listen to and even bring a special pillow if you think you need to. We also recommend essential oils, and eye masks and earplugs if you're going to be in a place that's loud. Now please don't revise, or practice, or watch tv too late, party, or panic. Often conferences do have social events and mixers at night they're okay to go to. Just have an exit strategy. Set alarms for yourself and be responsible. Now for your sleep, it's all about routines. Use the same face wash, use your same toothpaste, take a shower if you normally shower, and sleep in clothes that are familiar to you. Okay, I want to talk about food for a second because when we as human beings get nervous, we often lose our appetites and this is not a good thing. So my first piece of advice, please eat. Almost anything. You need to eat to survive and light foods are recommended; they won't upset your stomach and you'll be okay. Obviously avoid things like caffeine, new foods, and really heavy meals. If you need to make a plan for food in advance, please do it. I always pack nutrition bars just in case if I can't find something healthy. The same goes for medications. Stick to your routine, use non-drowsy sleep medications if you need them, and don't take anything for the first time. And last but not least, you got this! You've spent weeks if not months preparing for this presentation and you know your information better than anyone else. If you can't sleep, it's okay! Think positive thoughts and only focus on affirmations. You should be proud of your accomplishments. It takes a long time to get to where you are so be proud of yourself. If you start thinking about negative things like, "oh what if I forget my lines. What if I can't speak clearly?" Take a deep breath, breathe it out, and think something positive. I'm excited to give this presentation, I'm excited to teach my audience something new, and I look forward to the opportunities that this presentation will open up for me in the future. And lastly, we're going to focus on some light activities that you can do to reduce stress. Light exercise is always a great idea even if it's just a 15 minute walk around your hotel building. Try to keep your exercise early in the day so you don't have a high heart rate when you're trying to go to sleep. Small movement exercises are also recommended just so you don't accidentally injure yourself the day before your presentation. Remember to breathe, and remember to be positive; self affirmations are the best and I cannot recommend them enough. ------------------------------------------ Uni-edit provides English editing and translation services for conference papers, journal papers, research papers, theses, dissertations, and other academic manuscripts.
