#walkhikelearn #walking #hiking #learning #selfimprovement #thinking #motivation #selfdetermination Why do I hike and not kickbox? What's my sales pitch? What's my value proposition? There are four interconnected and overlapping reasons for what I do and why. These are: 1. Physical. First and foremost, I need to exercise. But I can no longer run or climb mountains. I don't have the bodily flexibility and I can't afford an expensive gym membership. I understand that what I do is not high-impact. I may not have big muscles, but I have strong legs and I can walk all day at a steady pace. 2. Situational. I enjoy nature and the outdoors. I also like to take on challenges, action and adventure. I don't always stay on designated paths and sometimes have no particular destination in mind for the day. I'll stop when I'm tired, hungry or intrigued by a location. When I'm in the moment, I can decide what I do and how I do it. It's ‘me time.’ It's my narrative to create and interpret. Something is enchanting about putting one foot in front of another in a sustained, purposeful manner. This feeling only occurs in my experience in the present situation. 3. Instructional. It's how I learn and self-improve. Walking and hiking give me the time and space for an inner dialogue that helps me think, create, understand and remember. For example, read my recent article on Substack about problem-solving. [https://open.substack.com/pub/phillip...] 4. Inspirational. Walking and hiking give me something to do, and they are activities I look forward to tremendously. Specifically, I enjoy planning my treks, maintaining my gear and meeting others on the trail. I'm motivated by the sustained effort needed to hike for several weeks with only the essentials in my backpack. Of course, I'm not claiming that walking and hiking lead directly to self-improvement—there's no causal association. But they can if you want to make the links for yourself. For my part, I'm a walker, hiker, and learner, and my publication Walk || Hike || Learn is how I choose to self-represent and self-express. Ultimately, I like sharing my experiences through my writing and multimedia production. So, this is my pitch: An idea shared is an idea multiplied, but this is only something we can do together. Welcome along. Let my journeys inspire yours! It's easy to participate and support my regular Substack publication, Walk || Hike || Learn. Point your browser to [phillipatowndrow.substack.com].
