A mathematical breakdown of the equations involved in the generation of downforce and its effects on the traction of the tires. The spoiler does not directly make the car any faster. In fact, the spoiler adds to the drag coefficient reducing the efficiency of the car in cutting through the air. However, while generating drag force, the spoiler also generates a significant amount of downforce. The downforce of course depends on the shape of the wing and speed of the vehicle amongst other things. This downforce contributes to the ability of the car to stick to the road. Since the car "sticks" to the road better, it could also allow for a higher velocity when making a curve. This is where the main advantage of the spoiler lies. The spoiler makes the car safer for higher travel speeds. Though to achieve those speeds, the engine and aerodynamic shape are still the most important components. Lastly, the video makes a comparison between a car with and without a wing. Putting numbers to the examples makes the difference more obvious.
