So, Lava Reef is the 10th in zone in Mania, huh? It was the 10th zone in Sonic & Knuckles, too. This is the 2nd "Sonic & Knuckles" zone in Mania, and (prior to Plus) the 3rd and final Sonic 3 Knuckles zone overall. Like other remixed zones, the structure of both Lava Reef Act 1 & 2 takes after a lot of layout designs from the game it came from. It even closely retains the locations of some of the big Special Stage rings. It does add some new things, though, like the big walker coming from Sonic CD's Metallic Madness, switchable conveyor belts from Quartz Quadrant, enemies and rising lava sections from Sonic 2's Hill Top, and lava gushers from Sonic 1's Marble. Act 1's boss is bigger version of the diggers that hold up the screen whenever they appear. Let it break through the rocks under you so lava can appear and break through its invincible armor. Then you can finish it off, yourself. ---------- The end of Act 2 ends up leading straight to the Sonic & Knuckles version of Hidden Palace, but you're on a new structure there as you must then fight the 4th of the Hard-Boiled Heavies: Heavy Rider! Just like Heavy Magician, Heavy Rider is also surprisingly female. She rides on a crazy Motobug named Jimmy, and Jimmy can use his wheel to jump over you! You can only damage Rider by hitting her directly, but Jim can block your attacks, and Rider herself is swinging around a giant mace that she'll sometimes uses as shield. She'll also do some trick like leaping over flames. Listen closely to the sound they make when they're building speeding. It's the exact same sound used for charging a spindash in Sonic Spinball! Jimmy's jump is also the jump sound from that game, too! Defeat Rider and Jimmy and they'll be out of your hair. All that leaves left is Heavy King, but for now, time to move on to yet another familiar zone... -------- Heavy Rider's Jimmy actually has a heartbreaking backstory behind his design for this boss battle. This Motobug is dedicated to a Sonic 1 ROM hacker tagged "Polygon Jim". He created a joke mod known as "Motobug the Badnik in Sonic the Hedgehog", where you're pretty much one of Green Hill's Motobugs as the hero instead of Sonic, and this Motobug jumps exactly like Jimmy does in Mania. The reason why this is so heartbreaking is because Polygon Jim, himself, lost his life in May 18, 2013 to a car accident. For a while, websites like Sonic Retro paid homage to his cute hack, and then, in Mania, he was referenced by making Jimmy the way he is (namely his ability to jump) as a memento to Jim. Rest In Peace, Polygon Jim. May more Motobugs gain the ability to jump in your honor...
