Sailing near Government Cut off St. George Island turned unexpectedly challenging as heavy turbulence and confused water developed in this narrow stretch. I initially planned to transit Government Cut, but as the turbulence and confused water built, I reassessed the situation and decided conditions were beyond my comfort level. I used the electric motor to maintain control, exit the area safely, and turn north—away from the cut and back into more manageable water. Government Cut is known for accelerating current and short, steep chop—especially when wind and tide oppose each other. This video shows how quickly conditions can change and why having auxiliary propulsion ready, even when sailing, can be critical in tight or high-energy areas. From a small-boat perspective, this is a real-world example of prioritizing good seamanship and risk management, and of using all available tools to stay safe when operating in coastal cuts and passes. 📍 Location: Government Cut, St. George Island, Florida ⛵ Boat: Com-Pac Picnic Cat ⚡ Auxiliary power: Electric motor used for control and safety 🌬️ Conditions: Turbulence and confused water
