The Argyll Mausoleum & St Munn’s Church (Historic Kilmun). A sacred place for over 1,000 years, Kilmun, Holy Loch near Dunoon, Argyllshire was home to one of the first Christian communities in the west of Scotland. The powerful Campbell clan, who became Lords, Earls, then Dukes of Argyll, adopted it as their spiritual home. They paid priests to pray for their souls, and their dead are buried in the grand mausoleum. Around 600AD Fintan Munnu, an Irish holyman set up a religious community in Kilmun. After he died in 635AD he was made a saint and his reputation turned Kilmun into a sacred place. In 1646 the Collegiate church tower was ruined during a feud between the Campbells and the Lamonts. Between 1442 and 1949, Clan Campbell Chiefs were buried here, initially under the church floor. From about 1660 they were interred in the mausoleum. On the wall of the ruined Collegiate church are 2 ‘mort safes’. These are extremely heavy and were left on top of new graves to foil grave robbers. There are many interesting headstones in the church grounds and graveyard. @historickilmun @cowalpilgrimage @kilmun @historicscotland @holyloch @mausoleum @argyll @dunoon @collegiate @lochlomond
