A Look At East Broad Top Railroad's Fall Reunion - 10/5/2024

East Broad Top…One of the best rail preservation stories around. The railroad that lost its main source of revenue in 1955 and just abruptly closed and sold for scrap. But the owner, Nick Kovalchick, saw something special in the line and didn’t scrap it. Five years later, the railroad reopened to celebrate the Town of Orbisonia’s bicentennial and four miles of the line was refurbished to provide excursion service. This excursion service expanded and more equipment was restored over the years, until operations ceased in 2011. One of the signature events during this time was their Fall Spectaculars. Held generally on Columbus Day weekend, anything that was operational was placed in service. Back when I went in the late 1990’s you could have four steam locomotives hauling passenger trains, freights, mixed trains, and some were double headed for variety. It was the only weekend that you could see the M1 Motorcar in operation as well. In the early 2000’s as less of the equipment was running, the name was changed to the “Fall Event.” For several years of non-operation, no one knew the fate of the railroad. Buildings were worked on by the non-profit Friends of the East Broad Top group, In 2020, it was announced that much of the railroad was purchased by the newly created East Broad Top Foundation, and plans were to resume excursions in 2021. The work that has been done to date is nothing short of phenomenal, and future plans look extremely bright. This was my first opportunity to really check out the railroad since steam operations resumed. In going along with the traditions of the old Fall Spectacular, they host the Fall Reunion over the first weekend in October to celebrate the accomplishments by both the EBT Foundation and the Friends of East Broad Top.
