At the top of the triangle is “emotion,” and below that is “literal language” on the left and “figurative language” on the right. Keys shares that you want a balance of all three, but a song must have at least two of these aspects. For example, you can write either a concrete or metaphorical song, but both need to contain emotion. These three concepts are meant to lead listeners to understand your characters, creating empathy and connection. In the Songwriting of Taylor Swift course, Keys discusses examples of Taylor Swift songs that balance the content triangle concept successfully, like “Would’ve, Could’ve, Should’ve” from “Midnights,” “Dear John” from “Speak Now,” “The Black Dog” from “The Tortured Poets Department,” and “cardigan” from “folklore.” Learn more about this course: https://berkonl.in/4m0bAJU ABOUT SCARLET KEYS: Scarlet Keys is a professor at Berklee College of Music and a former staff songwriter for Warner Chappell.
