For his first on-location portrait session of the year, photographer Gavin Hoey takes a deliberately relaxed approach, swapping his small home studio for a small shaded outdoor space. As Gavin explains, avoiding the midday sun makes it a lot easier to take portraits on location with a flash, keeping you feeling comfortable and in control. With a timeless wooden wall, vintage props, and plenty of soft ambient light, Gavin eases back into location work while walking you through each step of the shoot. Starting with natural light only, he explains how to control ambient exposure, just like in the studio, and why soft flat light can be a great free fill light. To bring the portraits to life, Gavin adds a single Flashpoint XPLOR400 Pro flash, paired with the Glow EZ Lock 36"x24" Softbox and a grid, which creates contrast and separation without overpowering the natural light.
