In 1938, Norwegian Alf Engen skied the wilderness behind Mount Ogden and declared that it would make a perfect ski resort. The Ogden Chamber of Commerce agreed, and in 1940 they held a contest to name a new resort. They had over 650 entries, and the winning name?? “Magic Valley”…wait what? But Twin Falls, Idaho, claimed the name “Magic Valley” was THEIRS, so the Chamber changed it to “Snow Basin”. Snowbasin was wildly popular from the start, championed by the Ogden Ski Club. One of their members, John Paul Jones, now has a lift and lodge named in his honor. In World War II, his ski skills were called up by the army’s 10th Mountain Division, a specially trained group of skiers and mountain climbers, who fought in some of the roughest terrain of the war. He died, reclaiming a snowy Mount Belvedere in Italy. Snowbasin kept growing over the next forty years, culminating in hosting both men's and women's downhill, and Super G events in the 2002 Olympics. This year Snowbasin celebrates its 80th birthday! I wonder if Alf Engen could have imagined that the ski area he discovered would become this World Class resort...I bet he could.
