French is a Romance language that evolved from the Vulgar Latin spoken in the Roman Empire, specifically from Gallo-Romance in Northern Gaul. It is closely related to other langues d'oïl spoken in northern France and southern Belgium. French has become an official language in 27 countries and is widely spoken across about 50 countries and territories. Walloon is a Romance language from the langues d'oïl family, spoken mainly in Wallonia, Belgium, with a minor presence in Brussels, northern France, and northeastern Wisconsin, USA. It developed within the historical Principality of Liège and is now classified as "definitely endangered" by UNESCO.
