This channel is about Whitby and its the local villages, concentrating on the old and new and the changes over the years. There will be walks with a bit of history thrown in. Some walks will take you to parts of Whitby you would not previously notice or even know about. There are many alleyways and yards in Whitby where people rarely tread and we'll be showing them too. This quick stroll takes you from Church St to the Ropery concentrating on the route of Salt Pan Alley Steps. William Scoresby, famous Arctic Explorer and inventor of the crows nest, had a cottage at the foot of the steps. He placed a water pump over the well here here in 1819 and Sir Hugh Chomley tried a salt industry nearby. It's all in the name - Salt Pan Well Steps (no scope for wit and fancy rhetoric in this Yorkshire town!) The pump is now in Whitby Museum and its original location is shown in the video. The walk takes you from Church St to the Ropery past many listed buildings. This s the first of two short videos. The second will be a walk down showing the views from a different perspective. It's good to walk... Please 'like', if you do, and 'subscribe' to the channel if you'd like to, hitting the notifications bell so as not to miss future videos
