We continue to venture where few eyes ever see in our continued search for Whitby's hidden yards. This time it is Prospect Place, three rows of houses built in 1816 by a Quaker of the Parish Gideon Smales. The houses were built on a steep hill separated by alleyways one of which can be seen here. The upper row of houses had to be demolished due to a land slip, a not uncommon occurrence in Whitby. Gideon Smales made masts and rope blocks for ships and was obviously successful as evidenced by his financing of these buildings. Unlucky though as he died the year after they were finished. He is buried in the Quaker Burial Ground in Bagdale Whitby. The walk is steep and interesting taking us up and behind the Middle Earth Tavern to the yard between the houses. The return tip gives a nice view of the Middle Earth Tavern in the sunshine with a happy clientele basking in the sun and enjoying the tavern's wares.
