The new year invites fresh starts, but lasting change is formed in quiet places. In a world filled with constant noise, notifications, and distractions, God invites us into a hidden discipline that often feels uncomfortable but deeply transformative: silence and solitude. In this message, Turn Down the Volume, we look at the life of Jesus and discover that even at the height of His ministry, He intentionally withdrew to quiet places to pray. Silence and solitude were not an escape from responsibility, but a rhythm that sharpened His hearing, clarified His purpose, and fueled faithful obedience. This sermon is part of our series The Hidden Work, where we focus on spiritual disciplines that shape us beneath the surface before they ever show results outwardly. Silence doesn’t mean emptiness. It creates space. Space to hear God clearly, to become aware of what’s happening in our hearts, and to respond with obedience rooted in love. If your life feels loud, rushed, or spiritually dull, the invitation is simple but powerful. Turn down the volume. God often speaks, not through the chaos, but through a whisper. Scripture References Luke 5:15–16 Mark 1:35 Psalm 62:1 1 Kings 19:11–12 Psalm 46:10 John 14:15 Key Themes Silence and solitude quiet the noise of the world Solitude is intentional, isolation is empty God often speaks most clearly in silence Silence reveals the roots of our struggles Hearing God leads to healing and clarity Time with God fuels faithful obedience Silence and solitude aren’t about withdrawing from life forever. They prepare us to reenter life with clarity, confidence, and obedience. When we intentionally make space for God, we begin to recognize His voice, trust His character, and follow His commands with joy rather than obligation. If you’ve been praying for direction, healing, or clarity but feel like God is silent, it may not be that He hasn’t spoken. It may be that the volume around you is too loud.
