Priest performing service STORYLINE: Macedonia observed a national day of mourning on Saturday as relatives buried their loved ones after eight soldiers were killed when their military vehicle went over a land mine near Tetovo on Friday. Elsewhere in Skopje shopkeepers of Albanian businesses were clearing up the mess after angry Macedonian mobs went on the rampage overnight on Friday. The rioters, angry at what they perceive as a Western bias toward the ethnic Albanians, smashed windows and looted ethnic Albanian-run businesses. The land mine explosion has shaken hopes for a peace deal meant to end this Balkan nation's crisis. The recent surge in fighting - including battles on the outskirts of the capital, Skopje - has jeopardized a tentative peace accord accepted earlier this week by ethnic Albanian and Macedonian political leaders. Though plans for a formal ceremony to sign the agreement on Monday remain in place, the troubled country appeared instead to be slipping toward all-out civil war. The country's foreign minister Ilinka Mitreva pleaded with U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan, NATO chief Lord Robertson and European Union envoy Javier Solana to assist Macedonia at "this most dramatic moment." Though dozens have died in the six months since the Albanian rebel movement emerged, 19 people on the government side alone have been killed in the days since the tentative deal was reached on Wednesday. Under the peace plan, ethnic Albanians would be granted more influence and a larger share of power in police, parliament and education. The rebels would be given amnesty and agree to disarm under the supervision of 3,500 specially deployed NATO troops. But the rebels say there is no reason for this to happen while government forces are using helicopter gunships and artillery against them. Meanwhile, President Boris Trajkovski convened a security council meeting to decide how to respond to the attacks, and issued a statement afterward pledging to press on with offensive actions. But Macedonians claim the rebels simply want to seize a chunk of territory and call it their own.
