The two sides have been fighting in the north of Macedonia since February. Recently the rebels threatened to start hitting main cities with artillery, but in issuing its ceasefire the government denied it was caving into these threats. An advisor for the government say the move was meant to alleviate two "humanitarian disasters" - water shortages in the city of Kumanovo and food shortages in villages affected by fighting. The duration of the ceasefire has not been stipulated, but the advisor said it came at the urging of the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe. A statement from the rebels faxed to The Associated Press several hours later said the insurgents would hold their fire for 24 hours, until 2 p-m local time (1200 GMT) on Tuesday. The announcements came shortly after guns fell silent in the north-west of Macedonia, near the city of Kumanovo. Rebels in the area took control of the city's water reservoir more than a week ago, leaving a hundred-thousand residents without water. Aracinovo, a village seized by rebels on Saturday, was calm on Sunday. But residents have continued to leave the town, with many of the ethnic Albanian inhabitants heading for neighbouring Kosovo, less than an hour away by car or bus. The threat to Aracinovo, an ethnically mixed village, also drove out thousands of Macedonian Slavs. Locals said a few thousand people remained in the town, where the normal population of about 13-thousand had grown to 20-thousand recently due to an influx of refugees from other embattled areas. The Albanian militants say they are fighting for broader rights for ethnic Albanians, who make up between a quarter and a third of Macedonia's two million people.
