MACEDONIA: SKOPJE: SERBS STAGE ANTI NATO PROTESTS

(23 Apr 1999) Eng/Serbo-Croat/Nat Serbs in Macedonia demonstrated against NATO airstrikes in Serbia on Friday. Chanting pro-Serb slogans and "Clinton is a killer", hundreds of people gathered in the capital Skopje to take part in the protest. They carried pictures of the Yugoslav President Slobodan Milosevic and chanted his name to show their support. Many were angry at what they saw as NATO's interference in the Serbian province of Kosovo which they regard as their heartland. Hundreds of thousands of ethnic Albanians have fled Kosovo - many of them into Macedonia and resentment is growing at the burden they are placing on the country. There's also concern that the delicate ethnic balance in Macedonia could be disrupted by the huge influx of Albanians. SOUNDBITE: (English) "I am anti-NATO, I don't like NATO.
