The recent backlash over the absorption of 147 contract teachers has spiraled into a damaging and disproportionate controversy, with biased narratives inciting public unrest. As a retired Kohima College faculty member, I cannot remain silent while our dedicated educators are vilified. These contract teachers—many of whom are among Nagaland’s finest minds—were recruited out of necessity, not favoritism, to meet NAAC mandates and ensure students’ education continued uninterrupted. Due to bureaucratic delays in regular appointments, colleges had no option but to hire subject experts on a contractual basis. These teachers shouldered equal, if not greater, responsibilities than regular faculty—often with minimal pay and no job security or benefits, all while remaining committed to students' growth. Instead of recognition, they now face public shaming, their names dragged online as though they were criminals. In our society, one’s name is deeply tied to reputation and dignity—this treatment is unjust and cruel. This issue stems not from teacher appointments, but from the state’s failure to establish a fair and timely mechanism for regularizing long-serving contract educators. It's time to stop punishing the teachers who stood by our institutions and start addressing the real administrative gaps. .
