FIRST EDITION: A Statesman and A Seeker: The Life and Legacy of Dr Karan Singh by Harbans Singh Dr Karan Singh and Harbans Singh in conversation with Ravi Singh, Launch by Namita Gokhale, William Dalrymple and Sanjoy K. Roy Karan Singh, born in 1931 to Maharaja Hari Singh and Maharani Tara Devi, was Head of State of Jammu and Kashmir for eighteen years. He joined Indira Gandhi’s Union Cabinet in 1967 at the age of 36, becoming India’s youngest cabinet minister. Singh was appointed Ambassador to the United States in 1989 and also served as India’s Member on the UNESCO Governing Board. He chaired the Auroville Foundation for twenty years and was a four-time Member of the Rajya Sabha. He is recognized as an outstanding thinker both in India and abroad and has written twenty books on a wide range of subjects. Harbans Singh was born in Samba, in the Jammu region of Jammu and Kashmir. He began his career as a college professor before moving on to journalism. He has worked for the Observer of Business and Politics, The Tribune and Dainik Bhaskar. Singh has authored books in both Hindi and English. His books include the monumental three-volume A Modern History of Jammu and Kashmir and (in Hindi) of Sufi Satta aur Samaj. Ravi Singh is publisher and co-founder of Speaking Tiger Books, one of India’s most distinctive independent publishing companies. He was also publisher and editor-in-chief with Penguin Books India and co-publisher with Aleph Book Company. Over three decades, he has worked closely with many of the finest authors writing from or about South Asia.
