This was my first 1cc of Ketsui. This was a huge achievement for me, and without a doubt the hardest clear I have done. It took approximately 6 months to achieve. It didn’t take long to figure out my route and strategies, but boy oh boy did it take a long time to execute. It's difficult to get consistent at this game, something I still haven’t achieved after many months of practice. This is a strange run, because I did an almost flawless run (for me) up to the final stage. Then at the final stage I went totally off route, panic bombed, froze, and generally self sabotaged. Somehow I made it to the final boss, and with some incredible luck in the last few seconds managed to get the clear. I had to jump through a few hoops to capture this replay. It was done on my Namco candy cab using a Groovymame 15k setup. The input was recorded first, then written to avi, but there were some issues with audio sync in the avi write. The out of sync audio was fixed in the final edit. GAME BACKGROUND: Ketsui was released in Japanese arcades by Cave in 2003 and has seen several console ports. In terms of controls it follows the standard conventions of bullet hell shooting games. Players have access to a standard shot with an optional auto-fire feature, a bomb button for dealing substantial damage, and a potent laser shot. What sets the laser shot in Ketsui apart is its lock-on function. This necessitates getting close to your enemies to establish a lock-on, introducing a unique rhythm to the game as you shift between auto-fire and lock-on. Cave has cleverly tied this rhythm, moving from auto to lock-on, into the game's scoring system. In Ketsui, there are only two available ships: the Tiger Schwert and the Panzer Jager. The Tiger has a wider shot and slower speed, making it an ideal choice for survival-oriented runs. In contrast, the Panzer Jager is a faster ship with a more powerful narrow shot. Players are provided with three bombs for each life, and there are numerous opportunities to acquire more, typically just before encountering a boss. In addition to two score extensions, hidden 1-ups can be collected during the game in stage three and five. However, it's worth noting that obtaining these hidden 1-ups is very challenging. Ketsui adheres to a well-established high-tech military theme. Set in the year 2054 the game portrays a planet suffering from the effects of global warming and nations are engaged in warfare. The arms manufacturer EVAC Industry Co. Ltd. (Cave spelled backward) fuels these conflicts, reaping enormous profits. To combat EVAC's influence the UN decides to employ the company's own technology against itself. The player pilots EVAC choppers to destroy their military-industrial complex. This is a punishing game, even when aiming for a straightforward survival clear. For more advanced players you can dedicate years to mastering two alternative second loops. However, the conditions for entering these loops are extremely demanding. For instance, to access the URA loop, where you'll confront the true final boss DOOM, you must clear the first loop with no bombs or deaths and achieve a score exceeding 120,000,000 points. The production values in Ketsui exemplify some of Cave's finest work. The stage design is fantastic, featuring engaging graphics and enemy designs. The soundtrack is exceptional! What truly sets the game apart is the gameplay rhythm and mechanics. Unlike many shooting games, Ketsui penalizes passive play at the bottom of the screen and encourages aggression. This unique approach creates a distinct and immersive experience.
