Joe Cooley – Chirps followed by 1F2B Tears in alternation, typically performed at a fast pace. The joe cooley scratch technique is great for scratching fast without having to do any advanced techniques like the 2 click flare scratch technique, or crab scratch technique. Before getting started it’s important to be familiar with the chirp scratch and 1f2b tears because the joe cooley scratch is actually a scratch combo of chirps and tears. You don’t have to master your chirps, or tears to learn the joe cooley. You simply want to be comfortable. As you advance your chirps and tears separately, you’ll also become more advanced with the joe cooley. 1F2B TEARS JOE COOLEY STYLE Although you can perform your tears at any speed when doing the joe cooley, fast tears will give it the classic joe cooley sound. In order to perform fast tears, you must eliminate the pauses between each note of the 1f2b tear and contrast the pitches of each note. If you don’t contrast the pitch, it’ll be difficult to hear all 3 notes of the tear after eliminating the pauses. To perform the most aggressive, contrasted 1f2b tear, you’ll want to push fast for the first note (high pitch), pull back slower for the 2nd note (lower pitch) and pull back fast for the 3rd note (high pitch). JOE COOLEY SCRATCH PATTERNS While the joe cooley scratch sounds awesome as is, in order to really maximize the intensity of it, you’ll want to create scratch patterns with it. This is a simple process of either repeating the chirp, or repeating the tear. Whenever you repeat techniques in a combo, it increases the intensity. The more you repeat something, the more your audience will feel it. Here are 3 effective joe cooley scratch patterns: 1. Chirp, chirp, tear 2. Chirp, tear, tear 3. Chirp, chirp, tear, tear The first scratch pattern emphasizes the chirp. The second pattern emphasizes the tear. The third emphasizes both the chirp and tear equally, but it’s the most intense out of all 3 patterns because there is more repetition. This is just the tip of the iceberg. You can create more patterns by adding/subtracting chirps/tears and including other scratch techniques. JOE COOLEY FREESTYLE SCRATCHING When learning the joe cooley and joe cooley patterns, it’s best to start integrating it into your freestyling right away. Improving the joe cooley in isolation will make it more reliable in a freestyle, but you also need to determine how it will fit into your scratch style. If you wait until your joe cooley is advanced, you’ll feel like you’re starting all over again in a freestyle. This is why my scratch students are successful. I don’t make them wait to learn every scratch technique before teaching them how to freestyle. I teach them how to freestyle with everything they learn right away, so they can master their freestyle scratching skills, as well as their scratch technique. When people listen to you scratch, they want to enjoy a musical performance. Freestyle scratching is the best way to accomplish this.
