Misdemeanor: A less serious crime, typically punishable by up to a year in jail and/or a fine. Felony: A serious crime, typically punishable by imprisonment in a state or federal prison for more than one year. Probation: A period of supervision by the court, during which a defendant must meet certain conditions. Competency: The legal ability of a defendant to understand the charges against them and to assist in their own defense. Incompetent: The state of not being able to understand the charges and assist in one's defense. Testimony: A formal written or spoken statement, especially one given in a court of law. Discovery: The process where parties in a case exchange information, such as documents and witness statements. Evidence: Information presented in court to prove or disprove a fact. Bruton Rule: A legal rule stating that the confession of one co-defendant cannot be used as evidence against another co-defendant if it implicates them. Waiver: The voluntary relinquishment of a known right. Retroactive Support: Child support payments covering a period before the court order was established. Custody: The legal right to care for a child. Non-Custodial Parent: The parent who does not have primary physical custody of the child. Protective Order/PPO: A court order designed to protect a person from harassment, stalking, or abuse. Consent Judgment: An agreement between parties in a lawsuit, approved by the court.
