The Story: Built for Roman Emperor Diocletian (284–305 AD) as a retirement residence, this sprawling complex now forms the core of Split’s city life. Bell Tower Views: Start your Split adventure with a climb up the Bell Tower (Katedrala Svetog Duje) for panoramic views. The climb can be steep and rickety, but the vistas are worth it! The Mausoleum & Cathedral: Diocletian’s mausoleum, now a cathedral, is the oldest Catholic cathedral in the world, consecrated at the turn of the 7th century.
