WHY DID SPINOZA CHANGE HIS NAME? As a young boy, Spinoza was groomed to be a rabbi. He showed superior intelligence; he grasped with great interest all the studies that were required of him and was introduced privately to philosophy and Latin. However, as his understanding increased, he began to see the limitations of the Jewish faith. No longer did he accept that Jews are the chosen people, and that God loved all people equally. And that God is not an anthropomorphic being or personal God. The Jewish community felt threatened and wanted him to be quiet. Eventually, they excommunicated him, so he changed his name to Benedict de Spinoza. He denounced his Judaism. He no longer felt a need to follow tradition and passively accept the Torah.
