An afternoon of alpine fun at the Ben Lomond National Park. Ben Lomond is located about 45 minutes out of Launceston. In this video we travelled to the ski village at the Northern end which is probably what most people will associate Ben Lomond with. The park itself is a high plateau stretching roughly 15km from end to end, ringed by dramatic dolerite cliffs and several notable peaks. The summit, Legges Tor, is Tasmania's 2nd highest point and is a fairly easy 1.5km hike from the ski village. In the winter months (and up till the end of September), it is mandatory to carry snow chains even if the road is clear. If you don't have them you have to hire them at the base store, along with skiing equipment. Alternatively you can do what we did and take the shuttle bus. Of course being a national park, you will also need a parks pass. Out of snow season, Ben Lomond is still well worth a visit. Jacobs Ladder is always a highlight and when the alpine shrubs are flowering, it's quite a colourful landscape. Photography by Don Hawley and Michelle McLean
