So do lie detectors actually work? When I say lie detector I'm not talking about those silly apps, I'm talking about a polygraph. First lets look at what experts say. The majority of the scientific community agree that polygraph machines cant accurately detect lies. There's no substantial evidence that they work as a lie detector but what they can do is detect nervous excitement. When someone lies and are aware of it they may involuntarily start sweating more, pulse rate may increase etc. The polygraph can pick up on these small changes and therefore detect if someone is lying. The problem is this is a very crude way of suggesting someone is lying. An ancient Arab test to detect if someone is lying works in a similar manner. The ancient Arabs would put a hot blade on the subjects tongue. If their tongue burns they are lying, because nervousness suppressed salivation and therefore ones mouth would become dry. However you don't have to be a genius to work out the flaws in their method. The polygraph while a little more sophisticated is still fundamentally flawed. Ultimately nerves can make you out as a liar even if you are telling the truth. And since if any lie is important enough for someone to use a polygraph machine then the outcome of the test must have some serious consequences. For example say we have two people both hooked up to a polygraph machine. One is asked a bunch of questions that hold no consequences. For example a question such as Have you ever lied about your age. If they fail that question no one will really care and therefore answering the question doesn't make the person nervous. Now say the second person is asked questions that do hold serious consequences. Things that could destroy their relationships with family, friends etc. Even if they are telling the truth they could become nervous just from being accused or having little confidence in the polygraph itself. This natural nervousness even if they know they're innocent can alter the outcome of the polygraph. Now people conducting a test would try and counteract this natural nervousness by asking a few innocent questions such as what is your name, your age, etc. They gather a reading based on the innocent questions and when they ask the real questions if the reading is different it would suggest they lied. But again this doesn't make much a difference. A test subjects nerves can increase just being asked questions with consequences even if they are lying or not. Another flaw of the lie detector comes down to what people believe about the machine itself. If you fully 100% believe a polygraph machine is magical and can detect lies with perfect accuracy youre far less likely to be nervous when questioned. However if you understand how the machine works and know its flaws like the ones I just mentioned your lack of confidence in the machine will make you nervous. After all youre placing your future and life as you know it in something that you know to not be accurate. That would make anyone nervous regardless if they're a liar. So do polygraphs actually work in detecting lies. They can do in certain situations, on certain people but the problem is everyone is different. Some people can remain really super calm under pressure, others crack the moment things get a little tense. On paper they look like they can work, in controlled test environments with no real life consequences they even achieved accuracy results of up to 98%. Proving they can work but in real life there are just too many psychological things at play that ultimately destroy their results. So next time you watch some TV show that uses lie detectors to prove if someone has cheated on their partner or not, just think of how many innocent people were falsely accused and their relationships destroyed based on a machine that doesn't detect lies, but rather nerves. ------------------------------------------------------- Vlog Channel: / more5 Twitter: / officialall5 Instagram: / sam_all5 Snapchat: SamAll5YT Website: http://www.All5.me -------------------------------------------------------
