The Varman Dynasty refers to two historical dynasties from the Indian subcontinent: the first ruled the ancient Kamarupa kingdom (in present-day Assam, India) from roughly 350 to 650 AD, founded by Pushyavarman; the second ruled parts of Bengal and East Bihar (present-day Bangladesh and India) after the Chandra Dynasty, with its capital at Bikrampur. The Varman dynasty of Kamarupa was the first historical dynasty of that kingdom, achieving prominence under rulers like Bhaskaravarman, a contemporary of Harshavardhan. The Varman Dynasty of Kamarupa (c. 350–650 AD) Founding: The dynasty was established by Pushyavarman, who was a contemporary of Samudragupta. Capital: The capital of the Kamarupa kingdom was at Pragjyotishpur. Independence: Initially subordinate to the Gupta Empire, the Varmans asserted independence as Gupta influence waned, with Mahendravarman playing a significant role in establishing the state's independence. Key Ruler: The last and greatest king of this dynasty was Bhaskaravarman (c. 594–650 AD), a prominent figure who was honored by Harshavardhan at a conference in Kanauj. Legacy: The dynasty is important for the political history and cultural development of ancient Assam. The Varman Dynasty of Bengal (Post-Chandra Dynasty) Rule: This Varman dynasty ruled in Bengal and East Bihar. Establishment: They established their supremacy after replacing the Chandra Dynasty. Capital: Their capital was located at Bikrampur in what is now the Munshiganj District of Bangladesh.
