Located in the county of Essex, and around 20 miles east, and slightly north, of central London, is the town of Brentwood. The history of Brentwood goes back to the 12th century when a small settlement was established in a woodland clearing on the London-Colchester road. In circa 1221 the Chapel of Thomas Becket was built, and a market charter was granted in 1227 by Henry III. The chapel brought many pilgrims to Brentwood as a stopping point on the way to Canterbury. Its ruins remain a prominent landmark in the dead centre of town just outside the Baytree Shopping Centre. In 1381 a violent confrontation with a tax collector in Brentwood sparked what became the Peasants' Revolt. A rebellion against the royal government under the then 14-year-old king Richard II broke out all across the southeast of England. This culminated in the sacking of the Tower of London and the abolition of serfdom, at the cost of around 1,500 lives. Historically, industry in Brentwood was based around agriculture, wool and iron. It was also a significant staging post for coaches travelling between London and East Anglia prior to the railway era. In 1840 the railway arrived at Brentwood as a temporary terminus by the Eastern Counties Railway. By 1843 the line had reached Colchester. Today the station is situated on the Great Eastern Main Line between London Liverpool Street and Norwich. The adjoining suburb of Shenfield is a junction station leading to Southend-on-Sea as well as the aforementioned Norwich, among other destinations across the east of England. Brentwood is a popular commuter town with frequent services to the City of London in just under 40 minutes, whilst surrounded by open countryside and woodland as part of the Metropolitan Green Belt which was developed to halt the outward spread of London's built-up area. In 1861 construction began on Brentwood Cathedral in the Gothic Revival style. Initially it was a parish church, but was granted cathedral status in 1917. In 1981 a decision was made to create a much larger and more ornate building, incorporating the 1861 church with work commencing in 1989 and finishing in 1991 at which point it was consecrated. Thus Brentwood, at the time of writing, is one of around two dozen towns in the UK with a cathedral but without city status. 👇 SUBSCRIBE TO 4K EXPLORER FOR NEW VIDEOS EVERY WEEK 👇 https://www.youtube.com/4KExplorer?su...
