Belly Dance Hand Drumming: The Ayoub Rhythm

This rhythm will put you in a trance! In this video I cover 4 versions of the belly dance rhythm called “ayoub”: the basic ayoub, the filled-a-little ayoub, the filled-more ayoub, and the fully-filled running ayoub. This 2-count rhythm has a pulsating, hypnotic feel and belly dancers like to perform showy "hairography" (choreography involving long hair) to it, such as hair tossing, hair swinging, and hair lassoing motions. In this video, I show how the ayoub rhythm can be varied by substituting in different strike types, such as the slap. I also demonstrate how you can practice the accelerating form of ayoub, which belly dancers find very thrilling to dance to as part of a finale. For each version of the ayoub rhythm that I demonstrate, I show its written notation as well. In my next video I plan to show you the "chiftetelli", a rhythm involving a slower paced, teasing approach to drumming!
