In this sermon from Romans 8:12–17, we consider what it means to live as those who are no longer debtors to the flesh, but sons and daughters of God by the Spirit. Paul’s argument moves from obligation, to identity, to assurance. Those who are led by the Spirit demonstrate that they belong to God’s family—not by fear-driven obedience, but by the gracious work of adoption. This passage places the believer squarely within God’s household. The Spirit does not enslave us again to fear, but testifies within us that we are truly children of God. With that identity comes both present suffering and future inheritance. Paul grounds Christian assurance not in subjective feeling, but in the objective work of the Spirit who confirms our sonship and guarantees our hope of glory. This message explores: – What it means to no longer be obligated to the flesh – The biblical doctrine of adoption and its Roman legal background – Being led by the Spirit as a mark of sonship – The Spirit’s testimony and the assurance of salvation – Suffering now and glory later as heirs with Christ Romans 8:12–17 calls believers to live in light of who they already are in Christ—adopted, assured, and awaiting the fullness of their inheritance.
