In the Jodo Shinshu tradition, the Kansho also known as the Gyoji-sho (ritual bell) is struck with a wooden mallet to a predetermined number, intensity and spacing of strikes. Striking of the bell is done in a pattern of 7-5-3. The bell is struck seven times, followed by a crescendo and a decrescendo; struck five times, followed by another crescendo and decrescendo; then struck a final three times. It is rung immediately before the start of a ritual or service to call the Sangha to the temple. The bell sound also prepares those attending the ritual that the minister is about to begin the service and also lets the priests know to enter the naijin or "inner altar" area. The TBC is a Pure Land Buddhist Temple part of the Mahayana tradition of Buddhism. We are followers of Jodo Shinshu Buddhism also referred to as Shin Buddhism. Jodo Shinshu is a sect of Buddhism which was founded in Japan in 1224 AD by Shinran Shonin. Nishi Honganji (Hongwanji) Temple is our mother Temple located in Kyoto , Japan and headquarters of Jodo Shinshu Hongwanji-ha. The basic tenet of Jodo Shinshu lies in the phrase Namu Amida Butsu ( I rely upon Buddha of Infinite Light and Life ). The phrase, called the Nembutsu ( Namu Amida Butsu ), links the Amida Buddha to the common people and crystallizes "all the practices accomplished and virtues accumulated for the sake of (the) attainment". The follower who utters the Nembutsu is expressing his gratitude for the awakening of Faith that will lead to Enlightenment.
