Scrutiny continues over how Nashville Electric Service (NES) prepared for and responded to the winter storm outages, as questions remain about who ultimately oversees the utility. Last week, FOX 17 News reported that many frustrated Nashvillians without power wanted Mayor Freddie O'Connell to hold the utility accountable. On Monday, Mayor O'Connell took action, issuing Executive Order 58 to create a commission tasked with reviewing the utility’s preparedness and response to the winter storm. The initial findings would be issued to the mayor and Metro Council within 6 months, and then the commission will issue a report with it's findings and recommendations within a year of the first commission meeting or as determined by the commission chair. At the same time, Nashvillans, like us, are asking for accountability, and that's what we'll deliver,” Mayor O’Connell said at Monday's press conference. Over the weekend, Mayor O’Connell called the pace of restoration and communication from NES leaders “unacceptable.” The mayor explained that the barriers to ensuring NES preparedness were a lack of communication. After Monday's press conference, the mayor's spokesperson told FOX 17 News that there was a lack of communication about the challenges of hiring linemen more quickly. He added that if the Mayor's Office had known, they would have taken action sooner. FOX 17 News reported accusations that union linemen were turned away by NES, and saw proof of them being turned away. Which NES leaders had said the safety of the contracted linemen and them knowing the system was an issue. As Mayor O'Connell held NES accountable, FOX 17 News dug into the oversight of NES leaders. The mayor appoints members of the NES Electric Power Board, and the Metro Council confirms those appointments. Of the five board members, only two have been appointed by Mayor O'Connell. https://fox17.com/news/local/nes-over... _______________ Follow! Like! Share! Subscribe!
