In this brief biography, we explore the life of St. Charles of Sezze (1613–1670) — a simple Italian Franciscan lay brother whose profound humility, obedience, and mystical union with Christ made him one of the hidden saints of the 17th century. Born Giancarlo Marchionne in Sezze (near Rome) to a poor farming family, he struggled with limited education but felt a strong call to religious life. Rejected multiple times due to ill health and lack of learning, he was finally accepted as a lay brother in the Franciscan community at St. Mary of the Conception in Rome. There, he served faithfully in the kitchen, infirmary, and as a porter — roles that allowed him to practice charity toward the poor, sick, and pilgrims. Known for extraordinary mystical gifts — including ecstasies, visions of Christ and Mary, the stigmata (invisible during life), and the ability to read hearts — Charles remained deeply humble, often calling himself the "donkey of the convent." He authored spiritual writings (despite his illiteracy, through dictation) and became a trusted advisor to popes, cardinals, and even Queen Christina of Sweden after her conversion. Canonized in 1959 by Pope John XXIII, his feast is January 6. St. Charles reminds us that sanctity thrives in hidden faithfulness and loving service, not in worldly status or learning.
