Scale it Up - D Minor Pentatonic Scale Here are 13 phrases that start simplish and gradually get more complicated, but they all (mostly) only use notes from the 5 note pentatonic scale. I modified the phrases from "Scale it up 2" in A Minor, nudging the notes and some rhythmical elements but largely keeping the groupings similar. Then I moved them onto other instruments. I had been composing my phrases on the keyboard and then realised that each different instrument enjoys subtle differences because of their different fingering, range, timbre and way of producing sound, and each different instrument can influence how you improvise. It is useful to learn to play like different instruments to diversify your palate of options. As I move this exercise into other keys I have had to move the operating space (selection of notes) to keep the phrases inside the limited window that the saxophone and flute are most comfortable in. The clarinet has an extra octave and the piano and guitar don't have the same limitations either. Depending on the key, this limited comfortable working area forces you be inventive on the saxophone and flute because you have less choice. On saxophone the other option is to swap betwen Eb (alto or baritone sax) and Bb (soprano and tenor sax) depending on the key and the type of sound you want. Each of the 13 phrases are played twice and have a 2 bar interlude between each new phrase to give you time to refocus. Remember you can use the chapters to go back and play it again and the youtube settings if you want to slow it down (or...speed up :-0).
