Welcome to Day 3 of my South Island road trip! Today, I am taking you along to a small, charming town called Twizel, tucked between snow-capped mountains, with a vibe that makes it one of those places you can’t help but stop at when exploring the region. Twizel may be tiny, but it’s a favorite stop for travelers and locals alike, especially those heading through the South Island for a scenic drive. In winter, the town even gets covered in snow, which makes the mountains in the background look absolutely magical. ❄️🏔️ Now, before we get into all the scenic stuff, let me explain why I jumped straight from Day 1 to Day 3. Day 2 was… rough. I was genuinely sick 🤒. I spent the entire day resting at my accommodation, surviving on ready-to-eat meals and making sure I could recover enough to continue the trip. Sometimes road trips aren’t glamorous, and this was one of those moments showing you that it’s okay to have a rest day in the middle of an adventure. So here we are, Day 3, fully recharged and ready to explore! First thing on my agenda: finding vegetarian options in Twizel. Now, if you have ever been to a small town in New Zealand, you know that vegetarian options can be… a challenge. I walked around the town, exploring its little streets and cute vibes, but most eateries didn’t have anything vegetarian. I headed just five minutes out of town to a local café, hoping to find a simple vegetarian breakfast. I am showing a small fuel station, a perfect example of what you will find in remote areas of the South Island. Fuel stations here aren’t massive; they are small, essential pit stops that keep road trippers going, and they are often lifelines in areas where towns are far apart. Finally, breakfast success! 🥧 I got a vegetarian pie, hash browns, and coffee, and I am breaking down the cost for you all, because I know budgeting is a big part of road trips. The breakfast was simple but satisfying, fuel for both the body and the adventure ahead. I am also sharing the cost of my accommodation for three nights. With breakfast done, it was time to hit the first real destination of the day: the Omarama Clay Cliffs. These cliffs are breathtaking, with their sharp ridges and layers formed over millions of years through soil erosion. Walking around them is like stepping onto another planet. Fun fact: parts of Disney’s Mulan movies were filmed here, which adds a little cinematic magic to the landscape. In the video, I am exploring the area, showing you all the different angles, and soaking in the incredible views that make the South Island so unique. After the cliffs, we headed back to town, and that’s when the weather turned. 🌧️ It started raining, which meant outdoor plans for the afternoon had to be canceled. When traveling in small towns like this, it’s important to remember that most food places close early, usually around 5 PM. This is especially true in remote areas, where the population is small and shops don’t stay open late. I ordered pizza as takeout before 5 PM, which turned out to be a lifesaver, and I am sharing the price breakdown for anyone budgeting their road trip meals. All in all, Day 3 was a mix of recovery, exploration, small-town life, food hunting, and epic scenery. Tips from Day 3 of the road trip: • Vegetarian options can be limited in small towns so plan ahead if you have dietary restrictions. • Order food before 5 PM; otherwise, you might struggle to find open restaurants in small towns. • Fuel up frequently—remote South Island towns often have small fuel stations that are crucial for longer drives. • Accommodations in small towns can be budget-friendly and convenient if you are planning multi-day stops. 📍 Next stop: Day 4, where we continue the South Island adventure and explore more hidden gems.
