The moment I said "single mother," their expressions clouded over. Japan's work culture still strongly prioritizes long hours and overtime over actual results. I used to work myself to the bone, sacrificing sleep until I collapsed on the stairs and was rushed to the hospital. I almost lost my life, and I refuse to leave my son all alone in this world. I am jobless and struggling in Japan, but the warm comments from all over the world give me the strength to keep fighting.
