I just completed the third, of a three-part series on the History of Huntington Beach. In the early days, Huntington Beach and the surrounding rural areas relied mostly on agriculture. After the introduction of Henry Huntington’s Pacific Electric “Red Car” service, starting in 1904, the city began to take shape. Incorporated in 1909, the city transformed from a small seaside village into a vacation destination…complete with a public pleasure pier, a dance hall and a saltwater plunge. Agriculture was still “king”, but that would change suddenly in 1920, with the discovery of “Black Gold".....this would lead to Huntington Beach's nickname of "Oil City". After nearly four decades of oil derricks lining the coastline, Huntington Beach would morph again...this time into "Surf City U.S.A., the home of the U.S. Open of surfing, attracting nearly 1/2 million visitors a year during the 9-day event.
