Reading from the first Book of Kings (10,1-10): In those days, the queen of Sheba heard of the fame of Solomon and came to test him with riddles. She arrived in Jerusalem with a very great retinue, with camels bearing spices and a very large quantity of gold and precious stones. She went in to Solomon and spoke to him of all that was on her mind. Solomon answered all her questions; there was nothing so obscure that the king could not explain it. When the queen of Sheba saw the wisdom of Solomon, the house that he had built, the food of his table, the seating of his servants, the attendance of his ministers and their apparel, the drinks, and the burnt offerings that he offered in the temple of the Lord, she was breathless, and she said to the king: “The report was true that I heard in my own land of your achievements and of your wisdom. I did not believe the reports until I came and my own eyes had seen it; and behold, not even half had been told me. Your wisdom and prosperity surpass the report that I heard. Happy are your people, happy are these servants of yours, who continually stand before you and hear your wisdom. Blessed be the Lord your God, who has delighted in you and set you on the throne of Israel; because the Lord loved Israel forever, he has made you king, that you may execute justice and righteousness!” Then she gave the king four thousand kilos of gold, a very great quantity of spices, and precious stones; never again came such an abundance of spices as those that the queen of Sheba gave to King Solomon. The Word of God Psalm Ps 36,5-6.30-31.39-40 R/. The mouth of the just proclaims wisdom Commit your way to the Lord, trust in him, and he will act: he will make your righteousness shine like the dawn, your justice like the noonday light. R/. The mouth of the just proclaims wisdom, his tongue speaks what is right: for the law of his God is in his heart, and his steps do not falter. R/. The Lord is the one who saves the just, their stronghold in time of distress; the Lord helps them and delivers them, he delivers them from the wicked and saves them, because they take refuge in him. R/. Second Reading Gospel Reading of the holy Gospel according to Saint Mark (7,14-23): At that time, Jesus called the crowd again and said to them: “Hear me, all of you, and understand: Nothing that enters a man from outside can make him unclean; it is what comes out from within that makes a man unclean. He who has ears to hear, let him hear.” And when he had left the crowd and entered the house, his disciples asked him about the parable. And he said to them: “Are you also without understanding? Do you not see that nothing that enters a man from outside can make him unclean, since it enters not his heart but his stomach, and so passes out into the latrine?” Thus he declared all foods clean. And he went on: “What comes out of a man is what makes him unclean. For from within, out of the heart of man, come evil thoughts, unchastity, theft, murder, adultery, greed, injustice, deceit, licentiousness, envy, slander, pride, folly. All these evil things come from within, and they make a man unclean.” The Word of the Lord
