This video tells the forgotten story of Francis Still, a man who belonged to the "human machinery" of the Industrial Revolution. Known simply as a "Knocker-Up," his life spanned from the peak of the Victorian cotton trade to the end of the First World War. Francis was a living link to the relentless discipline of the factory age, a man who witnessed history not from a carriage, but from the freezing cobbles of Manchester at 4:00 AM. We follow Francis from his childhood in 1870s Manchester, where he watched his father work as a skilled bolt cutter, through his brief stint as a waiter in the notorious slums of Long Millgate, and into the grinding reality of life as a general labourer. We examine his later years as a professional "human alarm clock," armed with a bamboo pole and a pea shooter to wake the city before dawn. Along the way, we uncover contemporary newspaper reports that reveal the strange world of his trade, from John Thompson, the "Doyen of Blackburn" who woke 200 families a day, to the deaf knocker-upper of Oldham who had to be physically shoved away from the door. His story captures the resilience of the working class and transforms the abstract idea of the Industrial Revolution into the vivid reality of a lived life.
