The assault was carried out by the 1st Marine Division under Major General William H. Rupertus as part of a broader effort to secure the Palau Islands before General Douglas MacArthur’s return to the Philippines. Prior to H-Hour, U.S. naval forces conducted several days of bombardment, but much of the Japanese defensive network—deeply dug into coral ridges and caves—remained intact. When Marines came ashore on the southwestern beaches, they encountered intense artillery, mortar, and machine-gun fire from well-concealed positions.
