LEARN THE COLORS IN ARABIC - Lesson 12 الالوان

Our lesson today is about colors. Alwanألوان A color in Arabic is loan لون Colors… alwan ألوان Color… colors, loan… alwanلون ألوان Let’s first learn the colors alwan, and then have some examples of using them. Every color in Arabic has a masculine and a feminine form. Like: White – abyaḍ أبيض –the feminine form is bayḍa بيضا (bayḍa is also an egg in Arabic) Black – aswad أسود- the feminine form is soda سودا Red – aḥmar أحمر- ḥamra حمرا Blue – azra’ أزرق– zara’a زرقا (azra’ in classical azraq) Green – aḫdar أخضر- ḫadra خضرا Yellow – aṣfar اصفر ṣafra صفرا Brown – binni بني– binniyye بنية Let me give you a rule here, if a masculine color or any adjective ends with an “I” sound like binni, the feminine always ends with “yye” sound. binni – binniyye Pink – zahri زهري zahriyyeزهرية Purple – laylaki ليلكي laylakiyye ليلكية Gray – ramadi رمادي – ramadiyye رمادية Golden – dahabi دهبي – dahabiyye دهبية Silver – fiḍḍi فضي – fiḍḍiyye فضية Orange – bord’ani بردقاني – bord’aniyye بردقانية Bord’ane is an orange If you want to say a light or a dark color. You use the masculine form of the color and add fateḥفاتح for light and ġame’غامق for dark. For example: Light green aḫḍar fateḥ x2اخضر فاتح Dark blue azra’ ġame’ x2أزرق غامق Colors are adjectives, so unlike the English language, colors in Arabic come after the noun. And the gender of the color must match the gender of the noun. Let’s see some examples: First I’ll start with the masculine. A white house - Bait abyaḍ بيت أبيض– (the White House is ilbait ilabyaḍالبيت الأبيض , and we will learn the definite article il in the next lesson) A white house - Bait abyaḍ A blue shirt - A’mis azra’ قميص ازرق A gray book - Iktab ramadi كتاب رمادي Let’s see the feminine A red rose - Warde ḥamra وردة حمرا A yellow apple - Toffaḥa ṣafra تفاحة صفرا A silver car Sayyara fiḍḍiyye سيارة فضية As you saw this lesson was so colorful, and you learned different colors.
