"It's hands-on, interactive learning," said Karen Cohn. They learn important water safety skills in and out of the pool, and interact with first responders. "It's important for the children to feel comfortable approaching a person of authority if they do feel that there is an emergency situation," said Cohn. This camp is taught by the ZAC Foundation and is based off the ABC and D's of water Safety. A-always have adult supervision when swimming, B stands for barriers around water, C is classes and CPR. And D stands for drain safety. "Which is the hallmark of our foundation. We teach families not to swim near drains," said Cohn. ZAC Cohn drowned in his family pool in a drain entrapment in 2007 at the age of 6. "We had no idea that could happen. We thought as parents we did everything we were supposed to do because Zachary was a really good swimmer," said Cohn. His parents Karen and Brian founded the ZAC Foundation to teach water safety skills to children and families. "In 2011, we had our very first camp here. It was special to us because it was home," said Cohn. "What they are learning now, are things that when I look back, I wish I had learned when I was a young kid because it's not just about me. It's about me and keeping others safe too," said Bobby Walker Jr., CEO of Boys and Girls Club Greenwich. This is part of a nationwide partnership with the Boys and Girl Club to keep kids safe in the water. "It teaches them a lifelong set of skills about how to be safe in the water, and also enjoy themselves at the same time," said Walker Jr. The ZAC Foundation also has a children's book to help families learn how to stay safe in the water.
