The country of San Marino was named after a saint - St Marinus in latin or San Marino in Italian. It is one of two countries that is surrounded by Italy on all sides. San Marino was a layman, a deacon and a stonecutter. Marinus was born in Urbino but had to fled because he was hunted for being a Christian who defends and serves other Christians. In 301 AD, a cave in Monte Titano where the modern San Marino city is located became his home. That was the beginning of what is known as the oldest surviving republic of San Marino. San Marino's followers became a free commune of Christians eversince. The city of San Marino became a UNESCO world heritage site in 2008.
