The Joseph story also explores what it means to feel safe living an obviously Jewish life in a country not your own, as Pharaoh dresses Joseph up as an Egyptian and gives him an Egyptian name before he is allowed to be ruler. In the wake of several terrible Anti-Jewish terrorist attacks this holiday, we are once again asking ourselves questions of safety and standing out. How are we to process these events during this very public holiday at this very difficult time and what might we learn from Joseph in Egypt to help us process it all?
